Here's How To Combat Those "Hipster" Beard comments.

We all get them. The "You're such a hipster, shave that beard" comment here and there. If you're like me, they get annoying. Especially if you don't consider yourself Hipster in any way.

First, some people are okay with being labeled a hipster, and that's fine Every generation has them. It seems to come from the previous generation's dislike for differences in the way that they grew up.

Looking at this chart from google shows how the term has trended over time:

Oxford defines the term hipster as:

A person who follows the latest trends and fashions, especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream.

So by this definition, someone calling growing a beard "hipster" agrees that growing facial hair is the latest trend or fashion...What?? It's time to get some things straight and explain what growing a beard is all about.

A few things you can tell those naysayers

Beards are imbedded in our history

Darwin, Lincoln, Hayes, Douglas, Knox, Engels...We can keep going. These men made big move in history sporting epic beards and no worries about being labeled anything hipster. Can you imagine Mary Todd Lincoln saying "Hey Abe, that beard has got to go". Nah, that didn't happen.

They are a personal choice

Most bearded guys make a decision to grow a beard. It is a choice and men stand by their choices and decisions. NO flickering or fraying here. If you like your beard and it gets comments (positive or negative) just make sure you stand by your decision. The firmness in your belief always shuts people up.

They may just be a little jealous that they can't grow one

Let's face it. There are a lot of genetics involved with facial hair growth. Some people can gorw facial hair some can't. I know not all of my friends can grow an epic beard. Patchy attempts get them angry and they take it out on the full grown glorious beard.

The look is what gets you the hipster label

In the end your beard shouldn't be the reason for the hipster comments. It's how you maintain it, grow it, what you wear with it. So if you're going for the look then wear the flannel, thick framed glasses and boots with your jeans cuffed. If not, stick with your style. A well dressed man, whether it's a casual look or a nicely tailored suit will avoid the unnecessary comments.
