Who Needs a Plastic Surgeon? It’s Not What You Think!
For most, when the subject of plastic surgery is mentioned, youth-prolonging and body-altering procedures come to mind, including liposuction, face lifts, nose reshaping and breast augmentation. But in reality, Plastic Surgeons can play a much more important role in people’s lives, including children. Why might a child need a plastic surgeon? Because accidents happen, and summer time is prime time for injuries that might require more than a Band-Aid. For instance:
- Broken noses – if you can get a child to a plastic surgeon within 24 hours after the accident, or even better, within the first 6 hours, you will see much better results in the event surgery is required.
- Deep cuts or large scrapes, anywhere on the skin, including the skull, but especially when located on the face – may require expert stitching to prevent disfiguring scars.
- Lacerations or trauma that rips or tears the skin – as above.
- Dog bites – if one isn’t available in the ER, best to call a Plastic Surgeon immediately following the incident.
- Burns – after they are stabilized, a plastic surgeon may be able to prevent scarring.
- Facial fractures – these can occur for a variety of reasons from biking and skateboarding tumbles to the football player who has suffered a hard hit on the field.
“All of these situations are real and represent medical problems that are often covered by insurance plans. Many people do not realize plastic surgeons do more than face lifts and eyes,” says Dr. Jay Calvert. “We also help with real medial problems by performing operations, such as corrections of a cleft palate, deviated nasal septum and scar reduction.”
Additionally, Dr. Calvert advises the following steps for these common childhood injuries so they don’t become bigger problems:
- Abrasions – clean, cover and keep moist to prevent scarring
- Road Rash – immediately clean thoroughly to prevent permanent ‘traumatic tattooing’ from dirt lodged deep in the wound. Keep moist.
- Put sunblock on wounds to prevent hyper-pigmentation (dark discoloration) of the scar as it heals.
