Pets and Human Foods

doggy begMany pet owners plead guilty to giving their pets at least the occasional table scrap. It isn’t a good thing to do, but many do it. I’m guilty of giving my girls bites of things from time to time because I love them and hate to say no to those sweet little faces. However, there are times when it is extremely important to say no.

There are many foods that are yummy for humans, but just plain toxic to our beloved pets, and it is important to know what they are and to make sure that your pets don’t get their paws on them.

Most pet owners are aware that chocolate is a big no-no. Baker’s chocolate is by far the worst and most dangerous, especially for dogs, but also for cats and other pets. Just a very small amount can prove fatal for many animals. Onions and garlic are also very bad for your pets, as both can affect the animal’s red blood cells and cause anemia.

Other foods that need to be avoided include grapes/raisins, mushrooms, and foods that contain artificial sweeteners. These things all contain toxins that can cause serious illness, and possibly even death.

Again, it’s hard to say no to our furbabies, but just like with our human kids, sometimes we have to say no because it is for their own good.

  1. I knew about some of the stuff, but I was told by the vet to give my dog garlic to combat fleas. It’s funny that that site is saying that garlic is bad for dogs. Hmmmmm, wonder who’s right. LOL

  2. Yes i agree, although my mom cooks for her furbabies, a 8 year old Min Pincher and a 9 year old Half Chihuahua and half Min Pincher. Jake who is the Min Pincher has just become diabetic. She goes crazy when it comes to her babies meals. They get good cut steaks all kinds of veggies, noodles, hamburger and rice meals, chicken gizzards, beef bones, lamb you name it they got it except she does not cook with any spices, she boils the chicken and she never gives onions or chocolate but they do have sundays. BUt now they sell doggy sundays in Stop&Shop so watch out in that ice cream section, there are doggy treats in there. They are sandwiches and cups. Its not always clear since they use all kinds of animals to attract consumers!

  3. I knew about chocolate but not about onions and garlic!
