Cheap Dorm Room Decorating Ideas
Well, summer is pretty much over, and with that, kids everywhere are groaning. For a great deal of college kids, it also means back to the dorms. The worst thing about dorms is that for a space you are going to spend most of your time for three fourths of the next year, it is extremely hard to customize such a small space (never mind having to share that limited amount of space with a roommate) to your specific tastes.
With this in mind, I have done some research, and have come up with some of the easiest, cheapest, and most fun ways to spruce up your dorm room!
Most often, the largest piece of furniture in your room is your bed, so it is critical to select bedding that compliments you. It is also one of the only things in your room you can customize without your roommate’s permission. Luckily, back to school season also brings back to school and end of season sales. dELiAs.com has the best bedding sale I have seen. They are offering bedding for up to 75% off, making all sheets less than $20, and in some cases, as low as $6-15; and don’t worry, they have dorm bedding sets available to fit those extra long beds! A great tip when it comes to bedding, specifically, is that reversible, solid colored comforters are your wisest choice, as they offer twice as many design options. Other stores that offer extra long sheets to fit your dorm room bed are Bed, Bath & Beyond, Linens ‘N’ Things, and Target.
Like I said, space is severely limited when it comes to dorm rooms. The hardest thing to accomplish when living in one, is maximizing your storage space. You don’t want all of your belongings all over the floor, making it impossible to even open your door! Some incredible space savers definitely worth looking in to are closet organizers and plastic hooks that can be easily fastened to your closet or bathroom door providing additional space for bathrobes or towels. It is also wise to invest some stackable crates for storage of CDs, DVDs, books, or just odds and ends that have no other designated space. A great place to look for quality space-saving units is Target. I found all dorm room gear on their website that is priced at under $20. Tables are also a must-need. They can serve as a desk for your computer as well as for your television, and provides an comfortable space to do homework.
After you have your bedding and your space-saving units for your belongings, you’re going to want to spruce up those drab walls! Posters are the most popular things you’ll see decorating college dorm walls. BareWalls.com is a fantastic place to get posters that fit your tastes, no matter what they are! Some other popular choices for decorating your walls are bulletin and memo boards, in addition to dry erase boards, all serving as a great way to leave messages for your roommate, spotlighting art or pictures of your family and friends.
And these tips are just the beginning of what you can do to spruce up your room! All it takes is just a little creativity! Take these ideas and run with them until you see yourself standing in a room that you decorated and love being in.

Good tips. When I was in school, one of the most popular things to do to increase storage was build a loft-type thing.
Obviously, this requires some ability to actually do the construction, but it’s really as simple as construction gets. You just build a platform 3-4 feet off the floor. The bed goes on top, and you can store stuff, or even put your desk/fridge under the bed. This makes a big difference in how much usable floor space a dorm has.
If you want a memo board that is waterproof, light, tough and flexible then take a look at ours. They are available in different colours and have loads of uses.
You want to try living in any rented accomodation over here (UK), the rooms are sooo small compared to those we see on US tv. As a result this kind of thing is quite common.

I love the Domestications.co. site. They have jersey sheet sets for less than $10 on clearance, and they even have Twin XL for dorm rooms for a few dollars more. My kids love the jersey sheets as they grow softer the more you wash them.

one fact is that college usually don’t have a lot of money to spend on dorm furniture, they can look for places like ebay or local classified ads for cheap second-hand furniture.
Some great ideas . . . I will be helping our daughter set up her dorm room this fall and some the tips you have given are really good. I have already purchased some items and found some other items at http://mysimplysales.com . I’m sure her dorm room will be both comfortable and functional.
Great ideas! I remember when I went to college I was always trying to find economical ideas to make my dorm room more personalized and unique to my own style. A fairly easy and inexpensive decor idea is vinyl wall decals. It’s a great way to add a personal touch to any wall and they remove easily without damaging the wall. Great for dorm rooms or for people who are renting and don’t have too many options for decorating walls. They are super easy to apply and remove. Here is one place to check them out http://www.wallingsdecor.com
Great article, it’s hard to find real quality dorm bedding. In my dorm my bed was my sleeping area, study area, hang out area, and occasionally my dinner table.
