This is a common question between new breastfeeding mothers. Raw honey, Is it safe while breastfeeding?
It’s safe for mothers to eat raw honey while breastfeeding. However, infants under the age of 1 year recommended not to eat honey.
Raw honey may contain some sort of bacteria which cause Botulism! Mothers have enough acidity in their stomach, so it can kill the bacteria which cause (Foodborne) Botulism. Unlike babies do not have this kind of acidity in stomach. That’s why breastfeeding mothers can eat raw honey as they can digest it with acidity, but if given directly to their infants under the age of 1 year, it will be harmful.
What is (Foodborne) Botulism ?
It is a dangerous fatal disease caused by botulinum toxin which produced when food containing this toxin is ingested. also be caused by intestinal infection with C. botulinum in infants, wound infections, and by inhalation, According to WHO Organization.
Symptoms of Botulism?
Botulinum toxins can damage the nervous system beginning with marked fatigue, blurred vision, diarrhea, vomiting, difficulty of swallowing and speech, leading to muscle weakness, respiratory system failure and ending with paralysis and death!.
Raw honey and Botulism:
Botulinum can be found in low-acid preserved food like, mushrooms, beans, canned food, canned fish, tuna and raw honey.
Raw Honey is a natural food for your baby:
-It is a great source of Antioxidants. These Antioxidants protect your baby from cell damage because of free radical. Free radical can cause diseases like heart diseases and cancer.
-Digestive: Raw honey can treat digestive problems such as diarrhea and peptic ulcer.
-Sore throat natural remedy: To add 1-2 table spoon to your cup of anise instead of (sugar), as sugar have an immuno-depressant effect according to the latest studies.
-Natural Anti-fungal and Antibacterial: There are some hospitals in Europe using Manuka honey against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is resistant to antibiotics.

-There is no risk from eating Raw Honey while breastfeeding as long as you don’t give it directly to your baby who is under the age of 1 year old.
-Botulinum is an anaerobic bacteria-means it can grow without need of oxygen-. So, it mostly found in canned food! As a result try to avoid eating this kind of preserved food at least while breastfeeding and pregnancy to protect both of you and your baby.
