Can I Drink Parsley Tea While Breastfeeding ?

Poultices of Parsley is also using for treating mastalgia (breast pain) and breast engorgement. An oral capsule containing Parsley can reduce the flow of breast milk though we don’t have any clinical trial reports to support the claim. Parsley as an herbal food is safe as declared by U.S Food and Drug Administration.

Is it safe to drink parsley tea while breastfeeding?

Parsley is safe to consume as declared by various health organizations including the US Food and Drug Administration Department. It is an herbal tea and is caffeine free.  Since Parsley is rich with medicinal properties, it would be better to consult your doctor, before try to consume it on a regular basis.

Though no clinical studies are available to support the claim that drinking Parsley tea can reduce the flow of breast milk, the reports are something serious to consider. It could be individual cases, and the result may vary depending on people. If you are regularly consuming Parsley herbal tea, it would be better to regulate the intake or avoid during breastfeeding.

Side effects of Parsley tea in breastfeed babies and mothers

  • As parsley decreases the flow of breast milk, your baby might not get the required nutrients for growth and development. It may retard their growth rate.
  • Parsley contains volatile oils and flavonoids. Though no clinical study is there to confirm it, there are chances of toxicity.
  • Excess consumption of Parsley tea may cause anemia and other kidney or liver related problems.

Since Parsley herbal tea is not a convincing herbal drink during breastfeeding, it would be ideal to find options to reduce its effects.  One of the best options is to reduce the quantity of intake with reduced concentration.  It is equally important if you can switch other harmless herbal tea if you are so particular about having a cup of herbal tea. These options will be a temporary pause, and you can resume having Parsley herbal tea once your child crosses the breastfeeding phase.

The properties of apiol and myristicin in Parsley can become potentially toxic, but nothing has proved scientifically. So if you ask, is it safe to drink parsley tea while breastfeeding, we can only say to an extent it may be safe.  As an herbal tea, it is safe, not if caffeinated.  But from the health point of view, it would be better to consult a doctor if you are breastfeeding mother.
