Book Review:No! I Don’t Want to Join A Book Club by Virgina Ironside
This book started out really, really good, but halfway through it fizzled, big time. Marie in the book was quirky, funny, and quick witted, with her friends, neighbors, and her French lodger. She is still in love with her friend from school, who is now a widower, and up till now never knew she was in love with him even after all this time, or so she thought!!
She daydreams and flirts with him, and acting like a school girl, and it is endearing. Her Friend is dating a much younger man she met on the internet, and it gets to the point of her sleeping with him, and then the dreaded no call back for her and she tailspins into a frantic state, that is almost embarrassing to read!!!! She also discovers that she is strangely attracted to the partner of her gay friend, both of whom she has known for ever, and when he voices his attraction to her she starts to fantasize about him.
It really starts out as a very good read, but once her grandson is born, she turns into this maniacal desperate “old” person who she insists throughout the story she wants to be. She starts to have these horrid dreams about her grandson dying, or getting really sick, and she starts to become this depressing obsessive compulsive granny. I found myself wanting to give her a good shake.
There was a really good part where she describes the colorful rubber bracelets everyone is now wearing, and states how she wants to put just a plain old brown rubber band on her wrist and when someone stops her to ask what her band is, “it’s a rubber band stupid”, somehow I found that really brilliant, and almost fell off my chair laughing! It does get bad when she has her manic moments near the end, and there are some really sad parts, but overall the book was alright. I was much more interested in the beginning, than in the end, but overall it was ok.
