Book Review: The Misadventures of Oliver Booth by David Desmond
Oliver booth is an antiques dealer/shop owner in Palm Springs. He is obnoxious, crass, and a narcissistic boob! But a very likable boob! He owns a shop “right around the corner” from Worth Avenue where all the very posh and very expensive shops are, and everyone who is anyone all shop on Worth Avenue. Oliver however, is not on Worth Avenue, so he has to make up for the almost nonexistent customers coming in to buy from him by hiking up his prices to make up for the lack of business. Not to mention all his antiques are made in Mexico!
When I first started reading this book the picture of James Coco came in as Oliver, as it was who I saw in the role. He believes he is as important as the rich and famous, and when he goes to a charity event, and is seated all alone and next to the kitchen it is almost more than he can bear. He tries to impress a rich partygoer and his wife, but only ends up insulting them and gets knocked into the pool in front of the whole party. He is then the front page picture in the famous Palm Springs tattler called the Shiny Sheet. Well it goes downhill from there for Oliver, but I laughed the whole way down! This was a very funny look at the rich and wannabe famous people of the “celebrity” world whether in movies, or just in high society. His trip to Paris to buy antiques for a client goes so bad you almost feel sorry for Oliver. Almost! A fun book, and also a good read. I liked it a lot!
