Book Review: The New Science of Getting Rich – Revised for the 21st Century by Wallce D. Wattles, Edited by Ruth L. Miller
At first, this book did not sit well with me. Why can’t we just leave a classic alone? It’s like movie colorization; if the film was made in black & white then for goodness sake let it be black & white. The original book is a classic and for good reason.
In 1910 when Wallace D. Wattles wrote The Science of Getting Rich, legend has it that he wrote it for coalminers to better their financial situation. Whether or not that’s true, the writing in 1910 was much different from our 21st century but very well written. Wallace was an extremely intelligent man with an actual equation on how to become rich. He explains in precise detail how it can be done. Also, don’t forget one of the greatest teachings, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” That’s part of what Wattles meant.
But it’s so much more than that. He will continually elaborate on “There is a Thinking Stuff from which all things are made and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe.” One of his examples is if you are wishing for a sewing machine, don’t just sit and think about it expecting it to materialize, there is action on your part that you must take. You can and will become rich if you follow his instructions.
I’m sure it is well-documented by now that Rhonda Byrne was given a paperback version of Mr. Wattle’s book a few years ago and went on to become rich and famous worldwide for making The Secret. Now, if that’s not taking the information from the original book and applying it, I don’t know what is.
Is this book a good read? Yes, for those who have difficulty with the original, because Ruth L. Miller breaks down the paragraphs and chapters for a more updated explanation. An added perk is the original text is included. Here’s the irony: if Ms. Miller’s wish was to profit from a great writer who perhaps is one of her favorites then she succeeded and kudos to her.

Hmmm…I have read Rhonda’s take on the Law of attraction as well as the other teachers featured on the book. I would say that I have come into a better material than it is.
Although Wallace has a point. I have another opinion of getting rich. It requires a little action but it requires your mind to focus on what you want—without doubting it. Boy, will you discover how things are so easy to come to you.

I much preferred the Wattles book to The Secret. Byrne’s new age overtones of “think and it will come without any effort on your part” did not sit well with me. I am in the camp where with thought and action, anything is possible.
