Back to School Shopping

Another Part of When She Was A Baby:

Being near the end of August, I can’t help but reminisce about those back to school sales. I always loved getting new school clothes, so I thoroughly enjoyed buying them for my daughter. The best years were between 1991 through 1996 – that’s when I could just about pick them out for her and she’d be so happy and grateful. I don’t know what happened, but about 1997 she became very picky and (sorry Amanda) peculiar. That’s about the time she turned (gasp!) 12 years old. I’m going to rename The Terrible Two’s, The Terrible Twelve’s.

Gone were the days when I could just pop into JC Penney’s by myself, or browse their catalogue and place a surprise order for her. I remember she’d open the packages so excited and want to wear everything at once. Of course I didn’t let her, but she’d try them on and model all these different clothing arrangements for us. It was fun and cute and we got along so well.

That’s about the time when everything in the world changed. Suddenly pre-teens were becoming so status minded and designer conscious. When I was a kid in the early seventies, it just wasn’t like that. Not only was my daughter adjusting to her new world, my head was spinning at the prices and “new” attitudes. Thank goodness we were still a few years away from the Spice Girls and Britney Spears.

The clothes not only defined the young girl, they absolutely made her. Wow! It was no longer fun to shop, it was an exact science and I was just clueless on this new formula. I wanted her to dress more preppy and she thought I was insane. Perhaps I was.

Anyways, we somehow, and I don’t remember how, reached some sort of happy medium and she got new clothes that did not reveal things that shouldn’t be revealed. Off to school she went. I could breathe easier knowing (hoping and praying) she would make good, right decisions. I think she did well. She never brought home a boyfriend that wore his underwear so we could all see it; hence the word under. There’s a reason it’s there – so you’ll know to wear them under your clothes.

Good luck in your back to school shopping.

  3. Great post Linda. Back to school shopping can be a nightmare. I dread it mostly because of the lines. It’s hard to shop online for the same things but wanted to let you know about a program called iBakeSale.com (badge top left on PJMommy blog) where you can shop for your kids and save money either for yourself or for your school. Pretty cool idea. Sure beats waiting on line in the store! :)

  4. Thank you Jonathan. I’ll look into that.
