Book Review: Dedication – Emma Mclaughlin & Nicola Kraus

If you are not familiar with these two authors, you should be. Their writing is amazing. Their most famous novel to date is the book “The Nanny Diaries: A Novel.”

The sleeve lining for Dedication reads “What if you’re ex-boyfriend was famous and adored by millions? What would you do if you had the chance to make him regret his entire existence? How much would you risk?” After reading that I knew I’d be in for a treat, and a treat this is. I must say that if this was a movie, it would be the type of movie I’d sit down and watch with my mom on a Saturday afternoon and gorge myself on a pint of ice cream.

I couldn’t put the book down from page one. Not only gripping but it really had me laughing out loud. I read a review that said this book is supposed to be a delicious beach read. I beg to differ – the book wouldn’t have made it to the beach. After bringing this book with me to work and reading it in traffic at red lights, I got cursed at, shouted at, and honked at. I was sneaking off to the bathroom to read a few pages – it just entraps you. It was as if someone glued the book to my fingers. It was truly a delectable treat to have such a well composed novel with a pinch of sass and a dollop of scandal.

Both Emma and Nicola’s writing styles are thoroughly enjoyable. I especially loved how they would flip between the past and present. This is not an easy task and can end up confusing the reader, but these ladies pull it off flawlessly. From the very beginning their approach makes you wonder, “What the heck did this guy do to make her hate him so much?” This is definitely a 6 out of 5!
